Competition is one of, if not the, most talked about aspects of any business or market. I speak with business owners all the time and they talk more about their competition then they do their OWN business!!!
I want to give you some reasons why your competition is actually good for you and your business.
They give you a model to follow
Think about this…you have this “crazy idea” to go around spray tanning people. The only issue is, no one has ever heard of or knows what spray tanning is.
Thankfully, you don’t need to worry about that. The industry has already been created and more than likely your path has already been paved.

The solidify the market
If other people are in business and are you direct competition, then that means that there is actually a market! I personally look at markets that have A LOT of competition and think about the ample opportunities that lie within that market itself.
If I see there are a lot of businesses that are willing to compete, I know that the market that exist there is very stable. I can get into a market like this and make my own little niche within it.
You are YOU!
That’s right, you are YOU! No one else can be like you, talk like you, think like you, spray tan like you… You get the idea.
You have a unique perspective on your business and what it has to offer. You are in this business for a completely different reason then all of your competition.
Being you allows you to standout in the crowd and not merely “fit in”.
If you truly come from a place of giving, competition doesn’t exist

Are you just in this business to make money? Or is there something deeper there?
I’ve spoke with a number of spray tan business owners, and most of them find joy in helping people feel good about themselves and feel “sexy”. There is something to be said with using that as the driving force for your business, as opposed to the $$$$$.
Come from a place of giving and actually care about what you do, deeper than money. From here, you will find that your job is much more fulfilling and easier to do!
They give you an idea of what NOT to do
You can learn a lot, good and bad, from your competition. Go online and read complaints and/or bad reviews and see what people are saying.
Do the employees know what they are doing?
Do they know the products?
Can they explain things to you?
Are they even good at customer service?
Look around, and I am sure you will find a ton of ways that you can learn from your competition.
Continue to learn, and competition will be a mere afterthought

How much have you learned since you started your business? I bet that you have learned A LOT more then you thought you would have.
You probably spent hours scouring the internet trying to find out what “DHA” stands for, how it works, why it works, etc. You were trying to learn about your new business.
Spend time each week learning new things about your business. I don’t just mean chatting around in the spray tan forums and asking about new products, etc. I mean spend time researching new ways to market your business, new people to meet, other ways to reach out to people, gain more insight into skin care or even read about retaining clients for life.
Regardless of what type of learning you want to do, it is good to continue to learn and to continue to advance yourself. Do me (and you) a favor. Don’t just read stuff all day, take action with what you learn. Try new things, think outside the box.
Ignore the competition
Work hard to ignore the competition that is around you. They are only there to make you look better! 🙂
